Reflexology —
What to expect from your first session
Reflexology is based on the principle that the feet contain reflex points which correspond to every organ, system and structure in the body. By working systematically across these points using specialist pressure techniques, a reflexologist aims to encourage deep relaxation and support the body's natural ability to rebalance and restore wellbeing.
It is important to understand that reflexology is not foot massage. It is a distinct, structured therapy that requires specialist training — Fiona holds a VTCT Level 4 Diploma in Reflexology and is a registered member of the Association of Reflexologists (AoR).
Your first session will always begin with a full health and lifestyle consultation so that Fiona can understand your individual needs and tailor the treatment accordingly. Many clients find reflexology profoundly relaxing and a meaningful way to support their general health and wellbeing alongside their everyday life.
Reflexology is a complementary therapy offered for relaxation and general wellbeing. It is not a diagnostic tool and does not treat, diagnose or cure medical conditions. If you have any health concerns, please consult your GP.
Your first appointment will begin with a brief consultation, where Fiona will ask about your general health and what you're hoping to get from the session. You'll then relax in a comfortable chair or on a treatment couch while Fiona works on your feet, face, hands or ears using gentle, precise pressure.
Reflexology is suitable for most adults. People come for many different reasons — to relax, to manage everyday stress, to support their general wellbeing, or simply to take some time for themselves. It is not suitable during the first trimester of pregnancy or for people with certain foot conditions — Fiona will discuss this at your consultation.
Is reflexology suitable for me?
All services are available to women aged 18 and over
A brief health consultation is carried out before every first appointment — please mention any health conditions, allergies or skin sensitivities, even if you are unsure whether they are relevant
There are some circumstances where a treatment may not be appropriate or where adaptations may be needed — I will always be honest with you about what is suitable for you personally
Reflexology is not currently available during pregnancy or for women who are trying to conceive — please speak to your GP or midwife for guidance on appropriate options
If you have any questions about suitability before booking, please just get in touch — I am always happy to have that conversation.
Reflexology initiates a process of rebalancing in the body that continues after your session ends. To support this process and get the most from your treatment, the following aftercare is recommended:
Drink plenty of water — hydration is important after reflexology to support the body's natural processes. Aim to drink more water than usual for the remainder of the day.
Rest where possible — many people feel deeply relaxed, a little sleepy or emotionally lighter after a session. This is a normal and positive response. Where you can, allow yourself time to rest rather than rushing back into a demanding schedule.
Avoid alcohol — ideally for the remainder of the day following your session.
Avoid strenuous exercise — give your body time to respond to the treatment before returning to intense physical activity.
Eat lightly — if possible avoid a heavy meal immediately after your session.
Notice how you feel — some people experience an immediate sense of calm and wellbeing. Others notice changes gradually over the following day or two — improved sleep, reduced tension or a lighter mood. Both are completely normal responses.
Reactions — occasionally people notice what is sometimes called a healing response following reflexology — temporary symptoms such as increased tiredness, more frequent urination, heightened emotions or mild headache. These are generally short-lived and are considered a normal part of the body's rebalancing process. If you have any concerns, please get in touch.
The benefits of reflexology tend to build with regular treatment. A course of sessions is often more beneficial than a one-off appointment — I will discuss this with you at your consultation.
